The Open Intermediate Class has seen its share of first time winners in 2017, and that is the whole point of having this class at the speedway, to get the younger drivers better acquainted with the Open karts before being thrown to the wolves in the Open Class. This week it was Dominic Tadiello breaking through for his first career Cycleland Speedway Victory.
Lead changes were not hard to come by in this race as we saw five lead changes in this one. Dominic Tadiello would lead the opening two laps before Dawson Hammes would arrive on scene. Hammes would take over the lead on Lap 3 before losing it back to Tadiello on Lap 4. Hammes would retake the lead on Lap 6 and looked to have the field covered. That is until his kart slowed on the front straightaway with what appeared to be an issue with the chain. He was able to make repairs and get back on track but his run for the win was over. That relinquished the lead once again to Tadiello who then was able to keep the field at bay to pick up the big win. Kyle Woodcock ended up with a solid performance as he would finish second in the Grandpa George Motors #9 kart. Kinden Peacock has now competed in five races this season and has three top five finishes as he crossed the line in the third position. Josh Wooten scored his seventh top five of the season by way of finishing in the fourth position. The fifth-place finisher was Carson Hall who picked up his first career Open Intermediate top five finish in the Mel’s #54 kart. The Hard Charger of the Main Event was Mike Ficklin in the Smog’s Plus #7JR as he started 16th and finished 8th.
The Points battle in the Open Intermediate Class has been getting closer and closer each week. A few weeks ago, Kyle Woodcock had nearly a 100-point lead over second place in the standings. Since then Josh Wooten has gone on a tear. Wooten now holds the Points Lead by 14 points in front of second place driver Kyle Woodcock. Colton Raudman has been closing in on both of them as well, as he now sits just 98 points out of the lead in the third spot. Kaiden Butler is fourth in the standings at 130 points behind Wooten. Dawson Hammes rounds out the top five in the standings, as he sits 172 points out of the top spot.
Points Race #13 is on tap this Saturday night, July 22nd, 2017. Hot Laps for the Open cars are scheduled to hit the track at 5:30 PM. That will be followed immediately by Qualifying for all classes.
